The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), established in 1993, bases its institutional development on five-year master plan to shoulder the task of making the Palestinian official statistical figure available for developmental policy makers, planners, decision-makers, and researchers in various environmental, economic, and social fields. The ultimate aim of the PCBS is to make an important contribution to the basis on which the government bodies make their decisions and found their priorities in order to reach their development goals. The purpose of PCBS is to establish a comprehensive and unified statistical system, to serve the government as an instrument of guidance for diagnosing problems, evaluating progress made, and to provide a truthful and impartial official statistics on demographic, social, economic and environmental states and trends to serve the Palestinian people.
Since its establishment, PCBS has been fully engaged in data collection and statistical tabulation in almost 40 fields covering the socio-economic conditions of the Palestinian society, which includes the related aspects to the statistics reflecting the protection of human rights by the monitoring system for a set of indicators (like: child rights, gender statistics). Now, after about decade of continued production of statistics from censuses, surveys, and administrative records, PCBS, being the official central statistical agency for Palestine, has shown a significant role in the capacity building of the country in addition to its role in the main international & national activities towards Palestine. The Metagora activity of PCBS is placed in this context.
As for the interests of regional and international cooperation in the field of human rights, PCBS was a member of the organizing committee of the SFSO-IAOS2000 conference on statistics and human rights. PCBS is an active stakeholder within the framework of the programme of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in statistics MEDSTAT. In addition, the President of PCBS is the representative of the Arab region in the steering committee of PARIS 21 initiative, and a member of "friend's of the chair" of UN statistics committee working on the minimum set of development indicators, and the UN standing advisory committee on development indicators. PCBS has an essential role in advocating and reinforcing the establishment of monitoring system of child rights in Palestine based on the CRC of United Nations, in co-ordination and collaboration with different national governmental, non governmental bodies and other regional and international intervening institutions in the field of child rights.
