CHAPTER 6: THE DATA-ENTRY PROCESS

6.1 DATA PROCESSING AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

The following major steps in data processing were undertaken:

  • Data entry

  • Verification/completeness check

  • Editing/update

  • Generation of summary tables
The computer programmes for data entry and generation of summary tables were developed using MS Access. The data-entry system simulates the format of the questionnaire for easy encoding of data from the questionnaires. The procedure allows for automated data-validation, such as range-checking and data-sequence validity required by the if-go-to instructions. Simultaneous data entry was conducted at different workstations. All data files were later merged into a single database.

Upon completion of data entry, further data verification and completeness checks were applied by reviewing the summary tables. Immediate correction or reconciliation of the data and/or programme was done thereafter.

Summary statistical tables were generated based on table formats approved by the Project ManCom. These tables are a straightforward summary of responses following the sequential ordering of questionnaire items, with data disaggregated for each tribe. The output data for those reports were generated from the database using MS Access. Further formatting for the tabular reports was done using MS Excel.

Analytical tables for more in-depth analysis of relationships among variables in the survey still have to be identified and drafted. The survey objectives and survey hypotheses shall be the guideposts for designing the format of those analytical tables. Initial table formats have been drafted by the NSCB Project Staff. These will be presented to the Project Implementing Group of Experts (IGE) for approval prior to the actual generation of tables.
